Warsaw, VA, Saturday & Sunday, April 24 & 25, 1999 - Race weekend arrives with the daffodils in scenic Northern Neck. The last weekend of April brings blazing jerseys and spoked wheels as the Menokin Road Race and the Heritage Park Time Trial take to the backroads of Richmond County Virginia. The TdW is promoted and organized by the Thulman Eastern/Chesapeake Wheelmen Velo Club, one of the oldest and largest cycling clubs in the region. This event involves cooperation from many different facets of the community. The local citizens and civic officials welcome the opportunity to share the beautiful setting with cyclists from all over the East Coast. Some of the attractions are a beautiful and challenging course, excellent organization, a hefty cash prize list and an innovative format. Northern Neck hospitality has been another big factor in the popularity of the race. The Chesapeake Wheelmen have a website with information about the club and their racing activities.

Ray Petrie, President of Northern Neck Tourism Council said "This event brings attention to some the tourism assets that make the area so special. Fresh breezes off the Rappahannock River and Dogwood blossoms along the course provide an incredible backdrop for this classic sport." The rural nature of the area provide many benefits for event organizers. Keith Shuey, President of the Chesapeake Wheelmen says "This is the perfect spot to hold a race. Traffic counts are low and the area pulls together volunteering their time to make the event safe and exciting."

The Pro /I/II/III 82.5 mile road race (RR) consists of 3 loops on the 27.5 mile course. The ’98 TdW was enormously successful, and the demand for more fields of competition was very pronounced. On a calendar full of races, the TdW is eagerly anticipated in the mid-Atlantic cycling community. The TdW is sanctioned by the United States Cycling Federation. The race is expected to draw two to three hundred cyclists for each day of the race. The Menokin Road Race is the final event of a six race series known as the Mid-East Coast Cycling Spring RR Series. Racers who are competing in that series will receive double points for placing in the MRR. The Heritage Park Time Trial (TT) follows the next day. Individual riders will be released at one-minute intervals to ride, as fast as possible, a 13.6-mile loop. There are nine categories of racers with teams and individuals battling to beat the clock.

Come early to enjoy the Pizza Party with the riders at Anna’s Pizza on Friday night. For more information about the Thulman Eastern/Chesapeake Wheelmen Velo Club, visit the website at or see or or phone call Keith Shuey at 410-247-4064 email:
